U20 World Championships
Nairobi, Kenya ‑ August 17‑21, 2021

STL's Michael Roth represented Canada this past week at the U20 World Championships contested in Kenya, Africa. Mike qualified to compete in two events, the 200m & 400m. He had a very successful week with 3 PB's in 4 days of competition. Mike placed 7th in the 400m final with a personal best time of 46.10. This was great way to finish an amazing and memorable outdoor season.

AO U18 Championships
Toronto, ON ‑ August 10, 2021

Eight athletes represent STL over the Weekend at the AO - U18 Championships in Toronto.

  • Dylen Belander won the Silver medal in the 110m hurdles with a new PBt of 14.62. Another PB on Sunday at the 400m Hurdles with 56.70 placing 4th. Dylan also anchored STL's 4 x 400m team with Ethan Dolby, Vincent Moore and Harrison Belanger winning the the gold medal in this event.
  • A new PB for Vince Moore in the 800m with a time of 1:57.53 and a 6th. place
  • Fox Gray placed 8th in the 200m final with a PB of 23.23
  • Ethan Dolby improve his PB's in 100m 11.46 and 23.71 respectably
  • A PB for Lynsey Last in the 200m with 28.20 and at Long Jump 4.59m
  • Emma Westbrook also PB'd in the 200m with 28.58
  • Claireese Cofeey improved her PB in Triple Jump with 10.36m
AO Open Championships
Toronto, ON ‑ July 30 ‑ August 1, 2021

Four STL athletes competed at the AO Open Championships last weekend at York University, adding 5 more medals to our 2021 outdoor season total:

  • Michael Roth won a Silver medal in the men's 400 metre, with a personal best time of 46.70 seconds and again a new Club record. The next day he captured the Gold medal in the 200m with time of 21.36. Mike will be competing for Canada in both events at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • Hallee Knelsen won a Bronze medal in the women's 1500-metre run, finishing in 4:30.81 on Saturday morning. In the 800m the next day, Hallee placed 5th with a new PB of 2:07.44
  • Justin Cole captured the Bronze medal in the men's 3000m Steeplechase with a 10 second personal best of 11:09.02
  • Tayah DeSousa competed in 3 events over the weekend, winning a Bronze medal in women's long jump (5.50 metres), placing sixth in the 100m hurdles (14.51), and finishing on Sunday with a ninth place in women's high jump (1.55 metres)
AO U20 Championships
Toronto, ON ‑ July 23‑25, 2021

STL athletes had another weekend of great performances last week at the AO/U20 Championships held in Toronto July 24-25th. With 10 athletes competing, 5 U20's & 5 U18's, STL placed 4th overall in the U20 category against 49 other Ontario teams. Yes, that's impressive!

  • Leading the charge was Michael Roth, winning the 400m and 200m with New PB's, 47.35 and 21.18 respectively. Those performances also punched his ticket to the U20 World Championships being held in Nairobi, Kenya - Aug 17-22nd. Mike made qualifying standards in both events. Later in the meet after running his 200m race, Mike also anchored STL's 4 x 400m relay team. Running with teammates Dylen Belanger, Fox Gray, & Mason Basson, Mike earned his third gold medal for the weekend
  • Hallee Knelsen was the gold medal winner the 1500m on the first day with a time of 4:34.03. On Day 2, she captured her second gold medal in the 800m with 2:09.16
  • Tayah DeSousa won gold in the 100m Hurdles with a new PB and a new Club record, running a time of 14.32. She also placed 7th in the Long Jump with 4.19m
  • Justin Cole won the bronze medal in the 3000m S/C with a new PB of 11:19.41

There were more PB's of note for our STL athletes:

  • Mason Basson ran for a new PB in 1500m (4:09.68) and placed 6th in the 800m with a time of 1:55.89
  • Vince Moore smashed his PB's in the 800m with 1:57.74 and in the 1500m, 4:14.51
  • Harrison Belanger had a new PB in the 1500m with 4:10.70
  • Dylan Belanger also placed 6th at the 400m Hurdles with 58.25

NTXCHAMP Invitational
Toronto, ON ‑ July 16‑18, 2021

ST. Thomas Legion Track & Field Club have been competing since the beginning of June 2021 on various Prep meets in Southwestern Ontario, such as towns of Ottawa, Windsor, Welland, St. Catherine's & Toronto.

STL athletes are back in form for this Outdoor season and they competed at their first championships on July 16-18 at York University at the NTXCHAMP Invitational for High School athletes.

During this Championships our athletes captured 5 Gold medals, 3 Silver & 1 Bronze.

  • Hallee Knelsen (Senior) captured the 800m (2:08.60) & 1500m (4:28.80) and she was 6th in the 400m (57.49)
  • Tayah DeSousa (Senior) won the 100m Hurdles (14.40) and she paced 5th in the Long Jump (5.31m)
  • Fox Gray captured the gold medal in 100m (11.90) and the Silver medal in 200m (23.48) at Junior Category
  • Lexi Stanat (Novice) won the Javelin (34.28m) NPB, and captured the silver medals also in Discus (36.69m) and Shot Put (12.51m)
  • Emma Westbrook (Novice) captured the Bronze medal 80m Hurdles (14.19) NPB and 8th in Long Jump (4.52m)

Other performances noted:

  • Mason Basson in the Senior men 800m placing 6th by New Personal Best with 1:55.77 and 4:10.19 in the 8th place
  • Harrison Belanger placed in 10th. position at 800m (Senior) with NPB of 1:58.90
  • AJ Stanat (Senior) 5th (13.91m) and 6th place in Discus (40.28m)
  • Justin Cole placing in 6th in the 2000mS/C with a NPB (7:07.57)

Chouinard Claims Conference Title at BIG EAST Championships
Geneva, OH ‑ May 15‑16, 2021

Congratulations to Rebecca Chouinard, a former STL athlete now competing for DePaul University, who captured the Gold medal in the Hammer Throw event with a new PB of 60.80m, claiming the conference crown.

Rebecca was competing at the 2021 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio. This was her 2nd straight title in the event at the outdoor conference championships.

Rebecca became a club member with St. Thomas Legion TFC during her grade 9 high school season. She took to all the throws events like a born natural, but she soon migrated toward Hammer Throw. During her time with STL, she won multiple Provincial medals. 'Becca' also served as one of our Summer camp instructors, sharing her passion with budding young athletes. She graduated from St. Joseph's C.S in St. Thomas and headed off to DePaul in Chicago, Illinois on an athletic scholarship. This is Rebecca's last year at DePaul, graduating with a major in Communications and Media.

As we all know this year has been a rough one for everyone, but despite the year of on and off training and limited competitions, we have some exciting news about our graduating athletes. We have a large group of STL's athletes that will be moving on to the next phase of both their educational and athletic endeavours as they continue their post secondary education in various institutions and Universities.

Over the past few months STL's athletes have been busy securing their directions for next September. Although they are appropriately focused on their academics and finding a well-suited program, as track & field athletes, there have been some excellent opportunities for our athletes to consider scholarship offers and bursaries.
